Movie Meme

How sad is my day when getting "tagged" by Mariko for this movie meme is the absolute best thing that happened to me all day long? Answer: Very sad.

THE MOVIE MEME
1. The Last movie you went to see in a theater: I saw House of Flying Daggers on Saturday. Wes and I were trying to see Sideways but it was sold out. Flying Daggers was good. It's very pretty but it doesn't hold a candle to Zhang Yimou's better films like Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad, Ju Dou or Hero. Maybe it's just that Ziyi Zhang doesn't hold a candle to Gong Li in my book.

2. The last movie you watched at home: The Politician's Wife on Wednesday (okay, it's a mini-series). I was disappointed with this. I adore Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply, anyone?) but this story was just too darned predictable. And then there were some really disturbing sexual elements to it that I was not expecting that didn't fit in (for me) with the rest of the story.

3. How many movies do you own? Once you add in all the kids' movies we probably own 75-100. Eeek!

4. What was the last movie you bought? I bought Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for my six year old last weekend. And then, because it was on sale, I got Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets too.

5. Got Netflix (or a similar service?) Netflix baby! I have a mind-boggling 413 movies in my queue right now.

What are the next three movies in your queue?
Little Big Man, Deadwood: Season 1: Disc 1, From the Earth to the Moon: Episodes 1-4

6. List five movies you adore/mean a lot to you:
Annie Hall: My favorite film of all time. I mentioned this at Purlygirls two weeks and got a bunch of people saying stuff like, "Oh, I *hate* Woody Allen." What? I don't get it. But then, I'm a Jewish New Yorker. Woody Allen is the culture I grew up in. This is the funniest, sweetest, most inventive romantic comedy ever.

Auntie Mame (Please do not confuse this with Mame starring Lucille Ball): Rosalind Russell, how I love your sass and style. It's not the holidays without it.

Goodfellas: I saw this with my dad on vacation in Florida almost 14 years ago and I still get goosebumps thinking about it. I find it so mesmerizing. The performances, the camera movement, the cinematography, the direction...oooo, it just gives me chills.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Best damned script ever. William Goldman was a genius. (He's not dead, he's just not a genius anymore).

Singin' in the Rain: I had this on tape when I was a kid and watched it over and over and over. I thought it was just a musical. Now as an adult I appreciate it on so many other levels. Holds a warm place in my heart along with another great Stanley Donan film, Charade (Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, what's not to love?)

It's so hard to only list five. I could go on and on.

7. Name your guilty pleasure movie (or genre): Some Kind of Wonderful. One day when I was 16 or 17 I had to go see my father's divorce attorney. My parents custody battle over me was heating up--a lot--and I wanted to have my say in it. My dad pulled me out of school early to go see the attorney. Afterwards we decided to see a movie. But we couldn't agree on one. I was a teenage girl and he wasn't. So we went to two movies. First we saw Some Kind of Wonderful then we saw Radio Days. There were a lot of similarities to the stories told in Radio Days to my dad's life. The film culminates on New Year's Eve 1943, the night my father was born. As all the party revellers run up to the roof top to ring in the new year, snow starts to gently fall. My dad leaned over to me and said, "It didn't snow that night."

8. I'm passing this on to three of my favorite knitting friends.
Marti, Molly and Jill.

So. Damned. Tired.

I have several posts percolating right now but I'm just too worn out to finish them. Just know that I'm here, I'm knitting, I'm spinning and I'm just trying to hang on until Wes gets home.

Knitting with Whine

The knitting:
After working on the Flower Basket Shawl for a few hours I started composing a blog entry in my head. It involved lots of references to Mrs. Weasley in Harry Potter and her bewitched needles that knit by themselves. The pattern was just growing and growing so effortlessly. Then I tried to watch TV while I knit it. Not a great idea.* I started misplacing yarn overs and generally having a bad time of it. I went to bed (really late). Last night I picked it up again and tried to find my mistakes and knit it while talking to friends. I knit about two rows. Ripped back. Gave up. Today I tried again at a playdate with many, many children, lots of parents and after a night of even less sleep.** Gave up. Tonight I sat down to watch The Wire which I just got from Netflix. Before I actually turned it on I found my mistake and got knitting again. Not bad for about one day's knitting.

The whine:
I turned on my movie. Then I realized that I had received the second season of the show instead of the first. I don't know who anyone is, what they are saying or why. Damn. But I'm so freaking exhausted right now I can hardly see straight. If I had any sense I'd go to sleep right now. And I just found out that Wes will be gone another day longer than I previously thought. That just about pushed me over the edge. Maybe with a little rest and a shower I'll have enough energy to face the day tomorrow.

*Another knitalong participant had a nearly identical experience knitting this pattern. Knitting away happily then whammo! All gone to pot.

**I went to bed absurdly late last night (2 am). At 5 am I realized that for the second night in a row the Tooth Fairy (me) forgot to give my six year a dollar for his most recently lost tooth. I got up, had to rummage around and find a dollar in loose change in my bedroom and slip it under his pillow. Of course, I woke him up. He asked if it was time for school already. I told him no, that I was just checking to see if the Tooth Fairy came and that he should go back to sleep. In his half-asleep state he pointed out that he *was* asleep until I came to wake him up. So I slunk back off to bed for another three hours of sleep.

I Swore I Wouldn't

But this quiz is right on the money. All of you who know me in real life can vouch for this one.

*looks at the current world's population* You must have a lot of frustration then.

What pisses you off?

Butterfly Update

Janet just joined the knitalong and she's finished already!

Heather is ready to assemble her Butterfly and knit the collar.

Mona is done with her body and heading toward the sleeves.

A Quickie (with Pictures)

Wes has been out of town the last few days. I feel like I'm not getting much knitting done. I haven't been to my usual evening knitting groups. But I finally took some photos of what I'm working on.

The body tube of Retro Prep is done up to the armpits and I've started the first sleeve.

Yesterday I spent over an hour and a half just weaving in ends on the first 35 rows of the Floral Felted Tote. And I finally found the mistake I made on Sunday night. So I've worked a few more rows on it and it no longer looks like a giant scary mess from the back.

I had a sudden flash of inspiration about fifteen minutes before I was supposed to drop my younger son off at preschool on the Flower Basket Shawl. I just got 400 yds hand-dyed sport-weight Red Barn yarn at the swap in a colorway called Black Cherry. It's a lot more cherry than black but I think it will make a very bright, pretty shawl. So I quickly wound it and got started.

And lastly, I went to the shop today and bought some more fiber for spinning. Today's fiber is 3.5 oz. of Coopworth.

I've got to go get the kids. See you!

Mariko just sent me a link to this postcard. I may need to get the t-shirt or tote bag.

How Can I Resist?

Alison is hosting another knitalong of sorts. And, since I seem to be determined to join every single knitalong in the known universe, I signed up too. I plan on finally digging Sam out of the back of my knitting closet. I need to take it apart, rip out both fronts, reknit them, reassemble it, knit the collar and sew in the zipper. No wonder I've been avoiding it. But since spring is almost here, I really need to get moving.

Swap-a-Rama

Yesterday was swap day. Knitters showed up at my house promptly at 2 with their bags of yarn clutched to their chests. I had a "check in" table where I placed a value on the yarn. I then gave the swapper a slip of paper with their total amount and put their name in the hat. After everyone had checked in we had a brief perusing period. This was an opportunity to decide what you hoped to get and to withdraw items if you weren't happy with the selection. We also had a mound of crappy acrylics that anyone was free to add to or take from. I pulled names two at a time from the hat and people got to "shop" and spend their credit. Everyone was very gracious and erred on the side of taking too little. I think most people did get a few things they wanted. And when it was all over there was still a lot of yarn left on the tables. I had to prompt people several times to come and take all they wanted. I've packed up everything that was leftover from the swap and the crap pile to donate. There was also tea, coffee and snacks. It was a very nice way to spend the afternoon.

Jill was a doll and took photos for me while I was checking people in.

My Haul

This was a lot of fun. I highly recommend it. The only drawback was that I was so busy being hostess I only knit two rows of my Backyard Leaves scarf.

Tonight I tried to get some work done on the Floral Felted Tote. I managed about four rows before making a mistake I can't find. This is one sloooooooooooooow project.

Pre-Swap Swap

Today I'm hosting a yarn swap and tea party for the Purlygirls (at least, some of them, 'cause I can't fit all 200 in my living room). But some of my closest knitting buddies couldn't make it so we decided to hold a pre-swap swap at my friend Cass's house. It also gave us a chance to celebrate Jill's birthday (go check out her very pretty new blog).

So the six of us gathered with our swapables. We just laid everything out and told one another about the yarn and why we originally got it. Then we started bargaining with each other. I think it all worked out really well. I don't think everyone got what they wanted and we all got rid of some baggage. We also assembled a pile of "crap yarn." This pile of acrylic ickiness was totally up for grabs. We will donate whatever isn't wanted to some charity knitting groups.

I can't show you what I got right now because I'm busy getting the house ready for the real swap but I can give you a little rundown. I got two skeins of Rowan All Season's Cotton in a very pretty light pink (for an afghan--I've been collecting ASC for this project for about a year now), some Filose (cotton/rayon) in misty blues and greens for Clapotis (!), and one giant skein of Interlacements Periwinkle Petite in rich reds and purples.

I also finished the body of my Retro Prep to the armpits and started my first sleeve.

I promise to take lots of pictures at today's swap and tell you all about it.

Beware the Mohair

At work today a customer came in, clutching her knitting bag, asking if someone could help her with a knitting problem. I was the only person in the store and said, "Sure." She pulled out a Kid Seta garter stitch scarf which a small child had removed the needles from and several stitches had been lost. I sat down with her with some extra knitting needles and a small darning needle and explained that I needed to rip back a little. She looked pained but said it was okay. I ran one of the knitting needles through all the stitches below the foul-up. It took quite a while to weave through all those fine, tiny stitches. My customer hovered, hands grasping reflexively every time I moved. I don't think she was breathing at all. Once I got the needle through I ripped back, stopping occasionally to unpick a snarl with the darning needle. Then I had to ladder back a few dropped stitches and get the knitting back on to her needles. She was very relieved and thanked me profusely. She thought she was going to have to rip the whole thing. Poor dear.

My Big Break

Last night my Knitty Gritty episode aired. I didn't make a fool of myself...or so I've heard because I haven't seen it yet! I'll get a copy of the tape on Thursday.

I've been working on my Sockapalooza socks. But today I realized they were a disaster and ripped out the first feeble eight rows I had knit and started again. They're much better this time around. I am making the Birch Leaf socks by Nancy Bush from A Gathering of Lace in Nature's Palette's Spring Grass colorway.

I spun more Finn today too aiming for that linguine thickness. It's still totally uneven but lots of fun.

January 17, 2005

Spin, Spin, Spin

I'm spinning-obsessed. I look at wheels longingly online. I read about spinning. I joined a spinning web ring. Obsessed, I tell you.

On Saturday I spun about an ounce of the Finn.

And plied it.

Still playing with photo draw. Notice the frames?

It's so soft and lofty and pretty and silky. I'm in love. My spinning is totally uneven. I was aiming for singles the thickness of thin spaghetti. I got crazy thick and thin. But I still really like it. I started spinning more and am trying to keep the singles the thickness of linguine and I'm doing an even worse job.

And tonight I brought my drop spindle to Purlygirls and showed how to spin with it. Then I plied my yarn with it. It's actually pretty good. Not spun too hard and relatively even.

In knitting news, I have 13 inches of my Retro Prep done, 9+ repeats of Backyard Leaves and I cast on and knit about 7 rounds on my Sockapalooza socks. I'll give all the socky details and a photo tomorrow.

Rebuilding

Okay, what was I posting about last night before Blogger got all mean on me?

I mentioned that I finished the second half of the Fir Cone scarf and grafted it to the first half. I haven't blocked the second side yet. Can you tell?

On Thursday I also started a simple ribbed hat in Magnum Chunky for a shop sample.

I worked on Backyard Leaves quite a bit this week but I kept making mistakes and ripping on Wednesday and Friday nights so I turned to the lulling simplicity of Retro Prep. It's growing nicely.

I plied, skeined and steamed everything I've spun so far. It's not terribly impressive.

The burgundy is the roving I spun on my drop spindle. The brown is the pencil roving I got last week as a gift. I spun it on the wheel but did a very poor job of joining it. As I spun it off the bobbin it broke apart at nearly every join. And the yarn that didn't break is very overspun and hard. The mint green is roving I bought about four years ago at a soapmakers' gathering to make felted soaps. I dug it out of the basement when the wheel came to visit. I also bought some ecru Finnsheep roving on Wednesday that I just started spinning yesterday. I'm trying to work on my consistency. So far the only thing consistent about my spinning is how overspun it all is.

I also received this from Rebecca on Monday night.

As the bag claims, she did give me her best. It's a bag full of alpaca! It needs to be carded probably along with some wool. I'm wondering if I can use dog brushes as cheap carders.

Yesterday I also finished the Magnum hat I started the day before.

And I played with Photodraw. Can you tell?

I think that was everything. Have a good weekend!

Shit

Blogger just ate my post. I'm going to bed.

There I Go Again...

Some People are Weird

I met someone tonight who was looking for a knitting pattern. She said it had to be knit on size 15s or larger, be intricate but easy and not be bulky. Okay...Then she balked at something in a book shown in self-striping yarn because the stripes would make her look fat. She told me all this while standing in front of me in a quilted down coat!

Note: If you're worried about bulk, take off the Michelin man suit.

Actual Knitting

I'm sure you're all wondering what I've been doing lately besides joining knitalongs (I did sign up for Secret Pal 4, by the way) and making feeble attempts at spinning. I have been knitting. I got back to work on Backyard Leaves and have finished three or four repeats in the last few days.

This photo was taken on Tuesday. It's longer now.

I'm also steaming along on my Retro Prep.

Also longer now.

I'm making the cardigan version and told the Purlygirls that I would cut the steek at one of our Monday night gatherings.

Forgot One More

I also joined .

January 10, 2005

Oh Man...Another One

What do you think? Should I sign up?

Knitalong Whore

This is what a friend called me the other day. It sounds wretched but, yeah, it's true. I have recently joined knitalongs for the Flower Basket Shawl, Recycling, Monster Slippers, Mariah (don't know if I'm going to knit it), Jacqueline Fee's Sweater Workshop Thing (just got the book yesterday), Greenalong, Scarf Style and Alison's Sockapalooza! What's wrong with me?

I'm still waffling on the yarn for the Flower Basket Shawl. I have some Elann yarn that might work. I was going to order some of the Baby Cashmere at Elann but while I was decided it sold out!

For the Recycling Knitalong, I will finally sew something together from the bag of felted thrift store sweaters that's been in my craft closet for over a year. I may also refashion an old sweater.

I finally finished the monster slippers on Saturday. I couldn't find the hot glue gun so good old Elmer's will have to do for now.

I have picked out a pattern and bought the yarn for Sockapalooza.

I am double-dipping on the Greenalong and the Scarf Style knitalong by making a Backyard Leaves scarf in green. But everything else I'm knitting is green too so I'm not really cheating.

Party Time

Wes was out of town for few days this week. Normally on Thursday nights I meet with a group of friends at a bakery to knit. Since I begged a friend/neighbor/fellow mom to sit for the boys while I was at work I didn't feel right asking her to stay for another two hours so I could go hang out. So in an inversion of the old adage, if Mohammed can't go to the knitting group, have the group come over to Mohammed's house. Seven of my best knitting buddies came over after I got home from work and knit with me. It was Molly's birthday on Friday so we had some goodies for her.

Marti was there too. Which was good for a few reasons. The first is that we love Marti. The second is that my boss loaned me her Lendrum single treadle folding spinning wheel(!) and Marti helped me set it up.

It was funny having everyone at my house. Even though I see them every week and we know each other so well we don't really see that much of each other's lives. We rarely meet each other's families, see each other's homes. I was so excited to have everyone over. I let the boys stay up a little late so they could come down and meet everybody. My four year old wanted to wish Molly a happy birthday too. We had a late night of knitting, chocolate and fun. I really enjoyed it.

I started my Retro Prep sweater too.

Spinning Snaps and More

Here are photos which go with some of the spinning I described.

This is my first attempt at 6 wpi (wraps per inch), then 8 wpi, then the pencil roving at 10 wpi.
And my latest attempt on the spindle which is even finer.

Here's the massive wheel of roving I got as a gift.

Here's the first half of the Fir Cone pattern scarf I'm working on for the shop.

What's New in Seattle

I still can't get the photos from my camera on to my computer. But I'm knitting and taking pictures. I will share them as soon as I can.

The monster slippers are still damp. I ran them in the dryer yesterday for about 40 minutes. And they are still damp! They will probably stay damp until July. Darned Seattle climate. (Oh and all of you with tons and tons of snow? I hate you. We have drizzle that may turn to snow in the middle of the night and turn back into drizzle in the morning. That's the best I can hope for--light slush. Sigh.) I will venture into the attic and attempt to find my glue gun. Hopefully hot glue will still stick to damp slippers.

I've been working on a new very small project. I am doing a one skein swatch/scarf for the shop in Lana Gatto's New Alpaca. It's so soft, so lovely. I chose another little lace pattern from 365 Knitting Stitches. This one is called Fir Cone. It's very easy although at some point watching Law & Order last night I misplaced a stitch and just kept on knitting. I had to rip several rows. But the scarf is only 31 stitches wide so it wasn't a big deal. I'm knit half the ball of yarn and then put the stitches on a holder last night. I will cast on for the second half today and then graft them in the center so the fir cones will all be right side up when it's worn. I wish I had done this with my Silk Garden lace scarf.

I have been thinking about my currents WIPs and have come to a decision...I think. I am going to abandon the Brown Beaded Socks. I will not complete all six socks for the Six Sox knitalong. I want to enjoy my knitting and this feels like homework now to me. But I feel badly. Like I'm quitting. I also decided I needed to start a new sweater. So I wound up my yarn for my Retro Prep sweater and I'm casting on right now. It will be some good mindless knitting which I can really use right now. A little break from lace scarves.

Clarifying the List

Okay, when I said I made 13 sweaters last year, I lied. I made 14. But I finished one on January 2nd so I really did all the heavy lifting on that one in 2003. And these were the first and only 14 sweaters I ever made. And two were baby sweaters. Let me recap for you.

In January, I finished Rosedale United.
In February, Banff.
In May, Lola and Lottie.
In June, the Shapely Tank and Rosy.
In July, Scrapenstein and the Norwegian baby sweater I made at camp (this is the one I forgot about).
In September, the GE Cardi.
In October, Rogue and a top-down baby sweater.
In November, Paula.
And in December, Butterfly and the Big Sack.

Shit. That is a lot of sweaters.

And I won't be gluing any eyes on monsters tonight because they are still damp! I even threw them in the dryer for a little while.

Eyes Acquired

I have giant google eyes in hand. Hot gluing will commence tonight!

Cosmic Convergence

I signed up for a wheel spinning class in March. So I did what I always do when I'm interested in a new subject--check out everything from the library on that topic. I got a copy of this video and started watching it last night. I was trying to knit Backyard Leaves while I watched. I screwed up my pattern and I didn't understand anything on the video since it was created for someone watching while sitting in front of a spinning wheel. But I did watch the pre-drafting and drafting part carefully and today I grabbed my drop spindle. I have only used it once and not at all successfully. Today I did a bit better. I spun a small amount of roving I bought a while back. I was able to look up how to ply it and ended up with two tiny balls of burgundy yarn. One is about 10 wpi and the other is more like 5 or 6 (from the old attempt).

I was feeling very encouraged and pleased with what I had accomplished. I had to stop to go pick up my oldest son from school. When I got there he said, "Here." And handed me a wheel of pencil roving! He told me that one of his friend's dad gave it to him to give to me. He also mentioned that it breaks easily which he noticed when he pulled on it. When we got home I tried to get more of the story out of him. He said that it was a present for me because I'm such a good knitter and that there was more where that came from.

How crazy is this? The day I decide to try spindling again someone gives me roving! Nutty! The universe is a strange and mysterious place. I started spinning the roving immediately. It's spins so nice and thin. No drafting problems. I was late leaving for Purlygirls because I was so entranced.

Oh! Further craziness. Today I was playing with an anagram generator that I saw on Melanie's blog who saw it on Hillary's blog (which is great! Check out the amazing holiday robot cookies and this huge handmade stuffed bunny in pajamas.). I tried a few variations on my name with and without my middle initial. I came up with "Jess, Ira -- close." This was very funny because my dad's name was Ira. But the name of the man who gave me the roving is...Ira! Weird, huh? I also came up with "Here's Calais, Jose," "Lice Harasses Joe" and "Ass Coil Jeers." I must have been pretty punchy this morning because I thought that was so damn funny. For Rose-Kim Knits I got "Ike Kim Snorts," which is insanely funny because my father-in-law is named Ike Kim. Wes got "slimy wee elk."

I Was Very Bad

Yesterday was the Acorn Street Yarns New Year's Day sale. I met up with 7 other Thursday night knitters before they opened. We were the first ones there. That did not stop several people from walking in front of us to wait by the door. What is up with that? There were a few people there who deserved some sharp kicks to the shins. People shoved. One woman stepped over me as I was sifting through a bin of Debbie Bliss Wool Cotton and actually tried to push me out the way with her foot. What. the. fuck?

Anyway, I was armed with a list of yarn requirements for many projects I'm interested in. I thought I would probably only end up with yarn for a hat for Wes. Well...see, after I sifted through the Wool Cotton and did not find what I wanted I head to the Merino Chunky--for the hat--for Wes. But on the way, something caught my eye. It was a box brimming with this gorgeousness.

Cashmere, Baby!

Noro Cash Iroha on sale for $6.99! Yes, cheaper than Wool Needleworks, where I'd been mooning over it earlier this week. So I got some. Okay, I got 15 skeins. I'm going to make the Curry Cable Cardigan from the Fall 2002 Interweave Knits. Oh baby!

After my cashmere/silk interlude I did head to the Merino Chunky and got Wes's hat yarn. I had to put back several skeins of Lorna's Shepherd Sock, also $6.99, because I'm already up to my eyeballs in sock yarn and I was already going to be overspending by a whole lot.

They also had Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon on sale. This stuff just rocks. It's soft. The colors are unbelievably divine. And it was $17.99 a skein. Fortunately for my bank account they only had two skeins left in Wild Raspberry. So I got one to make some sort of shawl/scarf/wrap something. I'm going to think long and hard about it. I want it to be really special.

Wild Raspberries

We all did pretty well at the sale. One friend is going to make a v-neck raglan out of Lorna's Shepherd Sock. Won't that be awesome? She got China Blue and one skein of a variegated blue for the trim. That's going to one great sweater.

We headed to a very nice lunch at Atlas Foods and then found a table in the cafe at Barnes and Noble to hang out and knit. We were very surprised to see Marti sitting at the table next to us. She had also been at the sale with some other knitting friends. I only brought my Brown Beaded sock to work on. The beading has been deadly slow. It was driving me insane. I was finally getting into a groove with it when I ran out of beads! What? Then I remembered that I added a pattern repeat because the original seemed really small. So I was only able to do six of the ten rows of beads. I can't say I was that broken up to be done with the beading early. I'm making the socks short and finished knitting the leg and started the heel flap last night.

I knit Wes's hat last night too. I think it came out well. It's very dense and warm.

I really like the swirly decreases.

Today was inventory day at the Fiber Gallery. We counted and counted and counted and counted for six hours. But it's all done now and the store looks gorgeous.

And one last thing, I saw this photo at Got Yarn and I just have to ask. What is this picture all about?

Is this two friends chatting or a snapshot of Girl Bar from the mid-80s? It seems kind of odd to me. I don't usually go out to chat with a friend wearing just jeans and a handknit scarf. Have I been watching too much of The L Word?

Eyeless in Seattle

I felted the monster slippers today. They are, er, interesting looking. I ran to the craft store to get the fun foam, red felt and google eyes. They had the felt and the foam but they didn't have the right size eyes. I ran to another store and struck out again. I really hope I find them in Seattle. I would suck to have to mail order a $1 item. I'll probably still have to pay $6 for shipping!

I also knit two more afghan squares while watching the second Lord of the Rings tonight. Man, those extended versions are long.

Happy New Year!
