Thursday Is for What the Hell Is This?
We're having an unusually mild winter here in Seattle but I know that's not the case for the rest of the country. You may be yearning for springtime, color, flowers. Let's just not get too carried away though.

Busting the Fiber Stash Too
My obsession for using up all my little bits has extended to my spinning fiber. I used up the final bits of superfine merino and plied it with some corriedale cross that I bought about a decade ago. I spun the singles softly and on the thicker side and then slightly over-plied them. The spinning went so fast!
I've also been clearing out any bits left on bobbins. Just grabbing two or three and plying them together. These skeinlets are only 15-20 yards each. Most of the singles have been on bobbins for so long I don't even know what they are.

This is a 2-ply light fingering weight from left over singles from my first fleece. I used most of the singles to make a 3-ply and knit Linney last year. There's about 225 yards.
I still have a tiny bit of this corriedale on a bobbin but other than that all my storage bobbins are empty! Now I need to decide what to spin next. And what to make with all this yarn.

One Hour Crazy Cowl
Pattern: Very loosely based on this Drop Stitch Cowl
Yarn: Leftover bits of superfine merino from various spinning classes spun thick/thin, approximately 70 yards
Needles: US13 Addi Turbos
Notes: This took less than an hour to knit. I cast on 30 stitches, knit two garter ridges then around of drop stitches with a single wrap, one garter ridge then round of drop stitches with a double wrap, two garter ridges then round of drop stitches with a single wrap, two garter ridges then bound off.

Another merino scraps spinning project. Spun a single of random blue/blue-green/brown/purple and plied it with a strand of blue-green. #handspun #rosekimknits

Blue Bell Hill Scarf
Pattern: Blue Bell Hill Scarf by Jocelyn Tunney
Yarn: Manos Wool Clasica
Needle: US9 Addi Long-Tip Lace Clicks
Notes: I changed the pattern to 51 stitches since this yarn is pretty bulky and the original makes an incredibly wide scarf. I knit the pattern and then ad libbed until I ran out of yarn. It's pretty short. I might sew the ends together and make it a huge cowl but it's workable as a scarf too. This pattern is really easy and a great way to use odds and ends.

Intarsia in the Round
On Friday morning at Madrona I took Anne Berk's Intarsia in the round class. It was just three hours and we got started on what was supposed to be a bag. I used four shades of Cascade 220 (it's really loose because I was using size 8 needles).
The technique is actually pretty simple...until it's not. I could knit along happily until I a mistake would pop up and then it took lots of concentration and muttering to myself to correct the error. And being me, instead of a bag I made a hat. I think the swirly decreases look really fun.
This is a toddler-sized hat. It's 64 stitches and only 32 grams of yarn.
ETA: I forgot to mention that there is a Craftsy class from Anne that covers this technique as well as basic intarsia.

Madrona Bound
I'm off to Madrona. I'm a bit anxious since I'll be encountering a lot of people I haven't seen since I was laid off. I fear I'll have to explain over and over again what happened and, no, I haven't found a new job yet. On the plus side I don't have to work or worry about work. That should leave a lot more hanging out and relaxing time.

Decluttering the Stash
Over on the Doubleknit podcast Ravelry forum we have a knitalong going to declutter your stash. We left it open to interpretation how one does this. For me it's all about partial skeins.
Little oddballs and half-used skeins of yarn are my main clutter both physically and psychologically. I can't just toss them. I need to use them. And when I do I am so happy and invigorated. So that's part of the reason you've been seeing so many striped hats. They use up those bits. You can finish one in a day. It's good for the soul.
My last helix hat used up all the worsted scraps I have so I actually broke into a fresh skein and started a Jango hat which also uses a partial skein.
Sadly the main yarn is very stiff and unyielding and the skein of Kureyon is so loosely spun that sections just drift apart as I'm working with it. In other words, this project is a pain.
So I started something that's falling-off-a-log-easy.
This is Blue Bell Hill Scarf, free on Ravelry. It was created for O-Wool Local but I'm using all my partial and oddball skeins of Manos Wool Clasica. I reduced the stitch count since my yarn is bigger and the original scarf is very wide.
I've also been working on the Follow Your Arrow 2 shawl but have only completed the first two clues. The fourth one was released today so I need to get back on that.
